Toolbox Talk: Machine Guarding

A ready-to-read toolbox talk on why guards are there, never bypassing them, locking out before clearing jams and keeping loose items away from moving parts.

Before you start

Hold the talk next to a guarded machine so you can point out the guards, interlocks and emergency stop.

Read this to your crew

Machines do not know the difference between material and a hand. Rotating shafts, belts, gears and blades can grab clothing, gloves or fingers and pull a person in faster than they can react.

Today we will talk about guards and the rules that go with them.

Key points

  1. Never remove or bypass a guard. If a guard gets in the way of the job, tell your supervisor. Do not tape over interlocks or prop doors open.
  2. Lock out to clear jams. Before reaching in to clear a jam or do maintenance, shut down and lock out the machine.
  3. Put guards back. Every guard removed for maintenance goes back on before the machine restarts.
  4. Watch loose items. Loose clothing, jewelry, long hair and gloves can get caught. Tie back hair and remove jewelry near moving parts.
  5. Know the stop. Know where the emergency stop is, and report any guard that is missing, damaged or not working.

Ask the crew

  • Which machines here have guards that people are tempted to remove?
  • Where do jams happen most?
  • Can you reach the emergency stop from where you work?

Picture this

An operator reaches past a conveyor guard to free a stuck carton instead of stopping the line. His sleeve catches on the drive roller, and his arm is pulled in. Locking out the conveyor would have taken two minutes.
