A toolbox talk is a short, informal safety meeting held at the start of a shift, usually five to ten minutes on a single hazard or practice. They are also called tailgate talks, safety briefings or safety moments.
OSHA does not require toolbox talks by name, but many OSHA standards require training and hazard communication. Regular, documented toolbox talks help show that workers are being informed about the hazards they face.
Weekly is common for construction and field crews. Many teams also hold one whenever the work, the site or the weather changes, or after a near miss.
Record the topic, date, location, the talk leader and everyone who attended. Each talk on this page includes a sign-in sheet, or you can capture attendance and signatures digitally in SafetyIQ.
