Fire Prevention Week 2027

A week every October to check that workplaces are ready to prevent fires and get everyone out safely if one starts.

What is Fire Prevention Week?

Fire Prevention Week is sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). It is held each year during the week that includes October 9, marking the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In 2027 it runs from Sunday, October 3 to Saturday, October 9.

The NFPA picks a new theme each year. For workplaces, it is a natural time to check extinguishers and exits, run an evacuation drill and review how hot work and flammable materials are controlled.

Ways to take part

  1. Run an evacuation drill. Time it, check the assembly point and account for every person, contractors and visitors included.
  2. Check extinguishers and exits. Confirm monthly checks are logged, extinguishers are charged and exit routes are clear.
  3. Hunt for ignition sources. Look for damaged cords, overloaded outlets, oily rags and heaters near combustibles. See ignition source.
  4. Review hot work permits. Make sure every hot work permit includes a fire watch and that contractors know the rules.
  5. Clean up combustibles. Clear cardboard, pallets and dust buildup, especially near electrical panels.

Plan around it

  • Early September: schedule the drill with your local fire department if they will attend.
  • Late September: update the emergency plan and brief floor wardens.
  • October 3 to 9: run the drill and a fire hazard walk-through.
  • After: fix what the drill exposed and log the corrective actions.
