A dust explosion occurs when fine combustible particles, such as those from grain, wood, metal, sugar, or certain plastics, become suspended in the air in sufficient concentration and are then ignited by a spark, flame, hot surface, or other ignition source. Because dust particles have a much greater surface area relative to their volume than solid materials, they can combust far more rapidly and violently, sometimes triggering a chain reaction of secondary explosions as the initial blast disturbs settled dust elsewhere in a facility. Dust explosions are a significant hazard in industries such as agriculture, woodworking, metal fabrication, and food processing, where combustible dust can accumulate unnoticed on equipment, rafters, and other surfaces over time.
At a grain storage facility, dust that had accumulated on overhead beams ignites after a spark from faulty electrical equipment sets off an initial small explosion; the shockwave disturbs additional settled dust throughout the facility, fueling a much larger secondary explosion that causes significant structural damage.
A dust explosion requires five elements often referred to as the "dust explosion pentagon": a combustible dust, an ignition source, oxygen in the air, dispersion of the dust particles in sufficient concentration, and confinement of the dust cloud, and removing any one of these elements can prevent an explosion from occurring.
Facilities can lower risk through regular housekeeping to prevent dust accumulation, using industrial vacuum systems rather than compressed air for cleaning, installing explosion venting and suppression systems, maintaining proper electrical grounding and bonding, and controlling ignition sources near dust-generating processes.
Industries commonly at risk include agriculture and grain handling, woodworking and furniture manufacturing, metal grinding and polishing operations, pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing, and food processing facilities that handle sugar, flour, or spices.
