Powerlink Queensland

Powerlink, a major Australian electricity transmission provider, needed a reliable way to monitor worker safety across its vast and remote network. Their teams often traveled alone to harsh locations, creating a strong need for real-time visibility and fatigue management. Powerlink piloted SafetyIQ to simplify check-ins, automate escalations, and centralize worker movement data. The tool was quickly embraced, expanding from 40 to more than 120 employees due to strong word-of-mouth. SafetyIQ ultimately reduced manual processes, improved safety oversight, and gave Powerlink back nearly 1,000 hours across 3,700 journeys.

Challenges

Powerlink’s workforce operates across a massive 1,700km transmission network, often traveling alone to remote and demanding environments. These conditions made it difficult to consistently confirm worker safety and manage fatigue risks. Their existing processes relied heavily on workers remembering to check in manually and supervisors tracking movements with limited visibility. Powerlink needed a simple, reliable solution that allowed workers to quickly confirm safe arrival at job sites or home. They also required real-time escalation workflows to ensure no worker went unaccounted for. Overall, the organization needed a system that protected staff without increasing administrative workload.

Solutions

Powerlink selected SafetyIQ for a pilot with 40 remote operations staff, which rapidly expanded to more than 120 employees after strong internal feedback. SafetyIQ enabled workers to confirm their safety with a one-word SMS, drastically simplifying check-ins. If a worker failed to respond, automated escalations alerted managers to verify their status immediately. A centralized dashboard allowed management to see planned check-ins and active journeys in real time. The pilot required no changes to Powerlink’s existing journey procedures, making adoption smooth and low-friction. SafetyIQ’s risk assessment and approval workflows ensured every journey was logged, reviewed, and monitored effectively.

Results

Powerlink significantly improved workforce visibility and replaced cumbersome manual processes with automated, reliable safety checks. The organization gained back nearly 1,000 hours while managing 3,700 journeys, eliminating time spent chasing check-ins and processing paper forms. Automated reminders and escalations reduced reliance on memory and ensured consistent accountability across all remote teams. The successful pilot engaged cross-functional stakeholders and paved the way for full implementation. Management now has live oversight of all workers’ planned movements and safety statuses. The result is a safer, more efficient, and more proactive approach to journey management.
